The trend in Eco-Homes is not confined to new build homes either.  Many of our extension projects are now incorporating a similar design methodology to provide Eco-Home Extensions. 

 

 

Environmental Design

It is widely accepted that many of our activities are damaging the planet, but what does going 'green' mean when considering a new build or extension project?  There are three main categories which influence the design of an Eco Build;

 

• Building Design and Materials
• Energy Performance and Efficiency
• Power Generation

 

Of course, we cannot eliminate finances from the successful Eco-Design or Green Development and as such assessing the cost benefit, evaluating grants, tariffs and incentives available as well as making use of available design tools are key factors in providing a complete design solution for the end user

Our new home and home extension projects have included the use of technologies such as solar (PV) panels, solar (thermal) panels, heat recovery systems, biomass boilers and heat pumps.  To date wind turbines have been found not to be the most cost effective solution for the domestic market and have not as yet been included on any of PD Architectures projects. 

 

Our designs have also included designs for super insulated homes, designs to maximise passive solar gains, detailing to give improved air tightness and designs specifically targeted at providing a high thermal mass to give a better passive control of heating and cooling of the internal environment.  Of course we are well upto speed with the 'Code for Sustainable Homes' and specification requirements and are familiar with the recommendations of the Energy Savings Trust and the Enhanced Construction Details.  We have completed designs well ahead of the code levels required by the governments regulatory reform, routinely at level 3 with energy performance in excess of level 4 and, subject to options taken, upto level 5, and we are well advised of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).  Architecture West Bridgford,

 

Code for Sustainable Homes

The Code for Sustainable Homes has been introduced to drive a step-change in sustainable home building practice. It is a standard for key elements of design and construction which affect the sustainability of a new home.

 

The design categories included within the Code are:

● energy/CO2	● pollution
● water	● health and well-being
● surface water run-off	● ecology
● waste

 

The code uses a sustainability rating of 1 to 6,  1 being the entry level and 6 being the 'zero carbon home'
