A LITTLE PIECE OF PARADISE IN DERBYSHIRE
Recently we took a ride out to what was once part of the American Adventure Theme Park site. So of course, we had to take the opportunity to grab a photograph of one of our previous projects en route! Our fabulous little home extension in Derbyshire.
The building; located in Mapperley, Derbyshire, was an abandoned shell when we were engaged on the project. The new owners at the time had not long submitted the winning bid for the property at auction, (shortly after the American Adventure Theme Park had closed for good).

Architectural Design Brief:
Our design brief included a program of refurbishment and modernisation works, to bring this characterful period property back into use.
As part of the refurbishment and modernisation works, our design brief included a rear extension. The design of the rear extension needed to be sympathetic to preserve the character of the original structure. Therefore, to link the new and old portions of the building, we introduced a full height glazed link. This glazed link subtly provided a natural break between the new and the old constructions. Visually, this facilitated the retention of the buildings original built form, whist also allowing the additional floor space to be seamlessly knitted onto the host property. It was important that the character of the original building was fully preserved, and the modern additions and alterations did not in any way detract from the period property we were working with. We couldn’t be more pleased with how our approach to this design turned out.
The owners subsequently went on to develop what is now, the ever so popular Nutbrook Coffee Shop with a separate commercial architect, (which many family members tell me is nothing short of a fantastic place to stop off for refreshments by the way). Unfortunately though, on this occasion, the coffee shop was closed when we happened by. (Our review of the coffee shop will therefore have to wait for now).
Courtesy of our trusty old #GoPro, you will see from the photo of our ride past, what we think you will have to agree is…“a little piece of paradise in the Derbyshire woods”
Here at PD Architecture, we are very pleased to have played our small part in the owners vision to create such a wonderful little setting for this beautifully restored home extension in Derbyshire. #designed4living
